June 6th, 1939 was opening night for the Val Air Ballroom. Admission prices were 85 cents for gentlemen and 25 for the ladies. The builder and operator was Tom Archer who arrived in Des Moines in 1936. The Val Air was originally an open air facility and was Archer's 'Summer Ballroom' (Memorial Day to Labor Day).

Built by William (Hubert) Kann in 1927 on a vacant lot on the north end of Guttenberg for an original cost of $27,000. It was to be a place for his children and the local citizens to congregate, play music and have fun.
